A 3D model of an EOD vehicle, created by me in Blender, June 2022.
The model is improvised and based only on my imagination, some Google images and my general understanding of how these machines work.
--------
The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) units are technically not robots since they do not perform any actions on their own. These remote controlled vehicles must be operated by qualified EOD technicians thus becoming their eyes, ears and hands at a safe distance.
These machines have been used by the military and law enforcement all over the world since the 1970s not only for explosives disposal but also for trespassing areas where no human could possibly survive (gas leaks, chemical spills, radiation etc.).
Equipped with an almost infinite number of possible accessories (anything that can be mounted on a standard Picatinny rail) they are extremely versatile. Several types of cameras including FLIR (Forward Looking Infra-Red), directional microphones, motion/moisture/density sensors and even a nozzle that can spray liquid nitrogen which is used to slow down detonator timers. Depending on the model and configuration, an EOD unit may cost between $200.000 and $2.000.000.
These little mechanical buggers have saved thousands if not millions of human lives all over the world just because they only cost money to replace if something goes wrong (and they have died a plenty). A technician's or anyone else's life is invaluable in comparison.
