玉藻の前対安倍晴明 - 2

星影姫翼

(2018)
Seimei looks slightly frustrated... XD

I tried, I tried... I tried. But the camera just always leaves out one part with less attention so now it's slightly tilted. :/ Though so is the work itself... ^^

Finally got an excuse to draw a torii gate! :dummy: I also did some brief research about the rope since they also appear in Ookami, pretty much everywhere, and not just attached to a torii, but round stones, trees... Apparently, it's a sacret rope called しめ縄 (shimenawa) that's used like a talisman to ward off evil or to attrack spirits to a certain place and cordon off consecrated areas.
The things attatched to it are known as 四手 (shide). The modern people usually use paper (the white zigzag object). Whereas the ancient Japanese people used hemp. Sometimes you see both of them like here. But hemp is rarely used (I hear) because it is not grown so much anymore. Shinto shrines tend to have their own ways of how the paper is cut to get the certain shape. The 四手 is also commonly used as a gift for the shrine. Shinto religion also being close to nature, the cord must be made of a plant.
The torii type used here is 三輪鳥居 (miwa torii or mitsu torii) 'the three lights' gate'.
That's about the brief research.
What I'd like to know is what those ribbons or knots are called that also appear on quite many characters of the game, like here the one hanging from Seimei's fan and the other tied round his hair. And whether they have a deeper purpose than just as an adornment.

Trying out titled view, and a low perspective in the same piece. It took several sketches and a little visualising help from my mother to get my idea of the perspective on paper. I also, since I hate rulers omnitted their usage completely. But since the torii is made of wood it doesn't matter if the pillars are stick straight or not. The fan was a joy to draw once you figured out how the hand should hold it. The Internet was of no help so I used a mirror and myself to get a ref. All for the sake of this drawing! ^^; At first, though there was only Seimei and Tamamonomae posing on the torii gate. However, the left corner looked a bit empty and so I had this feeling I wanted to show Seimei's expression and his unwillingness to fight. And the behind of the torii was also kind of empty, but I'd seen images of those kind of bridges searching for the ref so I added one. And just as a notion, Seimei's standing pose was not at all easy to figure out. I rubbed the sketch off so many times I feared I'd ruin the paper. Luckily, pastel is a good way to hide the faint rubbed areas. X'D
Partly accidentally I created there another 'ninetails' but it's pretty much consumed by the darkness of the poor lighting on the right corner... :( You're lucky though, if you can find it. :')

Feel free to interpret it as you like. Personally I imagined there being a forest fire or something burning (hence the sparks in the air). Oh, and what is he summoning? Is it Yamata no Orochi? Something else..
