As an anime, Akame ga Kill holds a special place in heart: it was the first series I watched after several months of not having good enough internet to watch online, and was the first anime I was able to keep watching that had "silly bits" in it (overly distorted exaggerated faces or nonphysical movement); prior to that I'd only watched fairly serious series, and found "silly bits" to be unnecessary and distracting so would quickly drop series that had them. In Akame ga Kill, though, I found that they helped to balance the darker sides of the story, and so it served as a gateway for me into more genres.
It was only recently that I found out the anime was a manga adaptation, and that the stories diverged slightly, so lately I've read that and the prequel (Zero), and am following the sequel (Hinowa ga Crush) as it is released. Personally, I prefer the manga ending of the series, and I'm not sure why they decided to change it during adaptation; I guess that some changes were necessary since they had omitted a previous arc, but I'm sure they could have converged to a similar ending.
