Before Ether clips became widespread, magazines were being reinvented to accommodate new weapon types.
When electromagnetic weapons became common, there was no need for casings for projectiles, as the energy for accelerating them was in the gun itself. Resulting in magazines holding triple the amount of ammunition. One of those, were vertical stack mags.
Vertical stack mags are the result of this change. Instead of containing the projectile and propellant, they hold only projectiles in a vertical, single file line, one slot of the magazine is open (which is where the bullets are taken up into the gun). When a row of ammo is used in the mag, the next one is moved into place, which is done through a smart-matter system.
