Return to hard shading practice

Densetsu1000

I ignored this for three year. I IGNORED THIS FOR THREE YEARS!!! GAAAAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

After around 3 years and 2 months (August to July 2017? - www.deviantart.com/densetsu100…), I have finally made something of a return to using (Or at least attempting to use) harder shading for this image, as I used to do in 2016 and 2017.

This is probably a good decision as to I use softer shading so constantly could be problematic if I want to continue developing black and white images in the future as well as colour, and the blend from grey into white on many of these images can come off as too muddying. In comparison, the harder shading can allow for a clear gap between the black, grey and white aspects of each drawing in sleeker fashion.

The harder shading can also allow me to arrange the shadows on each image in a neater fashion, as rather than just splashing the shadows on the image in their correct positions, I can actually sketch them on carefully and properly, so that they better fit on the image, and don’t stand out awkwardly or incorrectly.

With that said, I haven’t completely abandoned soft shading on a second layer (yet?) to add a secondary covering with the linear burn (Colour blending) effect above the base hard shadows. This could still be important in adding a smaller layer of depth to to aid the base shading layer which may come off. Boring by itself. Lighting will still be applied with largely softer tones. The application of supporting, softer shading can be vital for more spherical objects.
