Eris is the most massive, second-largest and the most distant dwarf planet in Solar System. Eris was discovered by a Palomar Observatory-based team led by Mike Brown on January 5, 2005, from images taken on October 21, 2003. Discoverers and the press originally called it the tenth planet, although there was no consensus on this issue. Some astronomers considered the discovery of Eris was the strongest argument in favor of transferring Pluto to the category of dwarf planets. Even the presence of a large satellite and atmosphere did not make it unique among the trans-Neptunian bodies: several others, including Eris, also had known satellites, and its spectral analysis assumes a similar to Pluto’s composition, which makes possible the presence of a similar atmosphere. In 2006, the International Astronomical Society gave a new definition of the word “planet”, according to which neither Pluto nor Eris nor other plutoids met its conditions.
