“I think I wanted to protect you from your future. Because your fate was sweeping you away, like a flood.”
I think he just realized that he can’t get the future that Eiji wanted to give him, and he couldn’t let that future be poisoned by anything from now on. So he chose to go back to that library waiting for the death finally came. That was the only moment he could ever escape from his fate, during that long long hours of bleeding till death. And the librarian found him laying on the table smiling with his eyes closed, she thought he’d fall asleep, and said, guess it’s a good dream.
That future Eiji promised to him was really a good dream(although it will never came true), guess he was the happiest boy in the world at that moment because he finally embraced freedom.
To me Ash is a character that similar to Simon from the Salinger story “ A Perfect Day for Banana Fish”. And the reason why Simon committed suicide is similar to the reason why Ash choose not to ask for help after he was stabbed by Lao. Both of them find a way out anyway.
