The Légion de la Vistule was one of the greater polish formations within the french l'Armée impériale/Grande Armée (大陸軍) of France under empereur (皇帝) Napoleon Bonaparte I. (ナポレオン・ボナパルト). It was named after the greatest river in Poland, the Vistula (ヴォルガ川).
In the Napoleonic Wars (ナポレオン戦争), the Poles allied up with France, hoping, they would be granted an own polish nation. After conquering Middle Europe, Napoleon formed the Księstwo Warszawskie (ワルシャワ公国), which had an own army, in 1807年 .
It was the first polish state after the Partitions of Poland (ポーランド分割) among Prussia, Austria and Russia in 1792年-1795年 .
In difference, the Légion de la Vistule was part of the french army itself. In 1807年 , it was formed as an italian-polish legion in the Regno di Napoli (ナポリ王国) and saw first service in Italy. Afterwards, it fought in Middle Europe and got stocked up with Poles, solely. The legion was directed to France in 1808年 , where it was officially named Légion de la Vistule and made equal to the other french line-infantry units. The legion featured infantry (歩兵), artillery (大砲) and cavalry (騎兵). The latter consisted of ułan (ウーラン).
It saw service in the french Invasion of Spain/Peninsular War (半島戦争) from 1808年-1811年 , then in the Invasion of Russia (ロシア戦役) in 1812年 , afterwards back in Germany (ドイツ), or rather the german countries, in 1813年 and finally back in France, there it was eventually disbanded in 1814年 (other units of the polish legions of the french army were deployed in the Caribbean Campaign of Haiti/Haitian Revolution (ハイチ革命) in 1802年 ).
