"Kamerad (トモダチ) Schnürschuh (靴 (靴紐))" (comrade lace-up shoe) was a rather informal and disrespectful term by german soldiers for the allied austrian soldiers in the First World War (第一次世界大戦).
While german soldiers wore boots (Stiefel (ブーツ)), austrian soldiers wore lace-up shoes (Schnürschuh (靴 (靴紐))) comined with gaiters (Gamaschen (スパッツ)).

However, later in the war, german soldiers had to wear lace-up shoes with gaiters, too, due to the shortage of raw materials.
