Arkhangelsk region - an area in the north of the European part of Russia.
Arkhangelsk Oblast is the largest constituent of the Russian Federation in the European part of Russia and the largest area (province) in Europe. The area of the Arkhangelsk region (589,913 sq km) is comparable to the area of large European countries - Ukraine (603 549 [K 1] / 576 604 [K 2] km²), France (547,030 sq km) and Spain (504,782 km²).
Founded September 23, 1937 in the division of the Northern Region of the RSFSR.
