Polish EMU created in 1993 by Pafawag. It was a development of the previous electric multiple unit EN57 (or more precisely its third generation) and the next EN71. Its main purpose was to service long-distance passenger trains. It was also the last EMU produced by Pafawag before it came under the wing of the Adtranz concern. Compared to its predecessors, it was slightly lower, which made it seem wider; the interior of the train was improved, including the driver's cabin, which was adapted (for those times) to modern standards. The trains were and are operated by the regional carrier Polregio, and from 2013 to 2015 they were operated by the private carrier Arriva RP. In later years, the trains underwent a thorough modernization, which is why they began to resemble more modernized variants of the EN57 (except for one marked ED72Ac with a changed front resembling those of high-speed trains). It was later used as a basis for the ED73 train produced in just one piece by Adtranz-Pafawag.
