Survive the End
The Beginning of Darkness
It all started on March 15, when the COVID-19 outbreak broke out in Lima, quickly spreading throughout Peru. That same night, the president appeared on national television, his face tense and his eyes marked by fatigue.
—Starting today, social immobilization will be mandatory from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. "No one should leave their homes," he declared, his voice firm, although a slight tremor betrayed the fear he felt. Everyone's health and life depend on this measure.
The news spread like wildfire. Fear was palpable in every corner of the city; People looked at their windows, afraid of an invisible enemy. The echo of sirens and loudspeakers echoed through the empty streets.
—Go back to your homes! This is a national emergency! —the police patrol cars announced, going through each alley.
Hospitals were overwhelmed within days, and local governments were in panic. The situation had gotten out of control. Juan, one of the health workers, could barely keep calm. He was talking to his wife on the phone as he watched the long line of patients outside the emergency room.
—I can't do anything, Claudia. This is worse than you imagine. People are dying in numbers we have never seen before. They should stay home, do you hear me?
Claudia's voice trembled on the other end.
—But Juan, until when? I can't handle this anguish, I feel like the city is falling apart.
The uncertainty was brutal. Desperate, the government signed an agreement with Corporación Prisma, a pharmaceutical company that promised a quick solution. The days passed, and finally the experimental vaccine was distributed among the population, as the last hope. The first to receive it began to show immediate effects, but rumors of severe reactions and strange behavior soon followed.
A week later, as Karen Bravo, a former member of Peru's Investigative Police, walked through the desolate district of Miraflores, a man staggered out of an alley. His skin was grayish, his eyes bloodshot. He lunged at her with uncontrolled ferocity.
-Back! —Karen yelled, drawing her gun.
The man did not stop, and seeing that he had no choice, Karen fired. The body fell to the ground, motionless, but at that moment he heard another grunt. He turned quickly and saw several more advancing from the shadows. They were like a pack of beasts, their human faces distorted by hunger and rage.
On the other side of the city, a group of soldiers blocked a street while an officer gave orders over the loudspeaker.
—Everyone inside their homes! These creatures are extremely dangerous! —His voice trembled, but the authority he represented forced him to maintain control. A neighbor watched from her window, murmuring terrified:
—What…what are those things? It can't be possible!
