DustMan, I am a fan of Digimon. Always have been.
I remember I used to have these two VHSs, and one of them had three episodes from the early parts of Adventure, and the other had the final few episodes from the Myotismon arc. You know, when the kids all returned to the real world for a little while? I watched those things religiously, I will tell you what. The funny part is that those episodes were the only ones I'd seen for such a long time. Yeah, I never even saw the very first episode before. Hell, let me be real with you. I've still never actually seen any of the entire seasons in their entireties! Not a one! The closest I ever got was the Tamers season, and I still missed a lot of that one. 02 was no exception. They used to air the show on Jetix (a truly goated channel if ever there were one), and I would stay up late into a school night watching Digimon and Adult Swim, desperately hoping my mom or dad wouldn't burst into my room and catch me.
Finding 02 was a surprise for little me. Again, I never finished the first Adventure season, so randomly tuning in and seeing not only two of the previous main characters grown up, but also a bunch of new characters taking the place of my OG squad? It was lot to take in... but I got over pretty quick, because I just thought it was awesome there was more of a thing I really loved. You gotta understand, when you're a kid, especially during the early 00s when the internet wasn't anything like what it is now, the idea of things getting sequels and additional material wasn't a given concept. I really thought one was all I'd get. So, whenever I happened upon another part of a story, I was always taken off guard. And then, a sequel that shares the same characters, only now depicting them as older? Dude, you wanna talk about a mind-blowing moment for a kid like me? Going from the reruns of my two VHS tapes to 02 and seeing TK and Kari as teenagers was crazy.
Kari was one of my favorite characters from the series as a kid. I think it was because I didn't have a lot of the series available to me, so I only ever got glimpses of her, or the role she played in the series. There was this air of mystery around her that intrigued the heck out of me. So, a lot of those blanks were left to be filled by me. And I ended up really becoming attached to her. My actual favorite Digimon character is, without a doubt, Rika from Tamers now. But, man, I still have a soft spot for Kari. And I always really loved her 02 design. So, of course I had to give it a go. Hope I did her some kind of justice.
