Among many of the rifles from science fiction, the M1-L1 Triple Pulse Assault Rifle is definitely one of my favorites. In the 1998 film "Deep Rising", a group of pirates led by Hanover (Wes Studi) are sent to hijack a luxury ship, packing an arsenal of Chinese made torpedoes, along with a crate of the M1-L1 Triple Pulse Assault Rifle for each man in his crew. Once aboard the ship, the pirates are then picked off one by one by the massive Octalus and it's nearly unlimited amount of tentacles. All weapons proved extremely effective against the tentacles, even in the hands of John Finnigan (Treat Williams) and Trillian (Famke Janssen).
According to Hanover, the M1-L1 Triple Pulse Assault Rifle is developed in China, designed to be water tight. It possesses 5 individual barrels that rotate when fired, possessing a flashlight, as well as a 1000 round magazine and auto-cooling system. Behind the scenes, the rifle is based on the Calico M955A submachine gun, which possesses a helical 100 round magazine. The weapon's caliber is never specified, but there were scenes in the film showing the casings of 5.56mm rounds falling to the floor, which would indicate it's an assault rifle and not the smg variant. The weapon emits a unique sound when fired, which makes it sound like a horde of scarabs chasing their prey from "The Mummy", which is ironic, considering Deep Rising's director Stephen Sommers also directed the remake a year later. The weapon also made appearances in other media like "Smallville", "Stargate SG-1" and the pilot episode of "Sanctuary".
