Mersalmons have a hierarchical system that also involves the physical appearance of individuals. Dominant individuals tend to have a heavier, unpatterned torso, with full-colored, darker, olive to brick-colored skin, while gregarious individuals are lighter, leaner physique, and often exhibit camouflage patterns even on the skin of the torso and face.
Furthermore, gregarious mersalmons, both male and female, are always beardless.
During the rut, the dominant mersalmons, both male and female, undergo a change of livery: the scales color mutates becoming various and bright warm shades, mainly red and gold. The gregarious mesalmons, on the other hand, remain unchanged.
Here, have more merfolk Xanatos and Owen, used as examples to show differences in males of the same species (Xanatos is a dominant, Owen of course a gregarious).
(Is this all @lunartidesmagic‘s fault? Yes. Yes it is).
