On one of the many occasions where Gretel visited her penpal Heidi up in the Swiss Alps, Heidi had something new to show her friend. Having stolen Peter's shears again, she used them to cut off the skirt part of her alpine dress before pulling down her knickers to be bottomless. Although she was still a bit shy about it, she knew this was Gretel's favourite thing to do and she'd hate to let her friend be lonely. After doing the same thing to Gretel's dress (with Heidi promising that someone in the nearby village can make the offcuts into skirts for them both), Heidi giggled as her penpal took off her knickers and the two of them ran around completely bottomless.
Eventually, they spied Peter, slacking on his duties and sleeping against a rock. Gretel said that a sleeping goatherd was not a proper goatherd, so decided to help him out, digging a blue crayon out of her pocket and scribbling a goatee onto his chin. All proper goatherds that she knew had those. Heidi laughed and decided to draw a mustache on her friend's face too. She wasn't being naughty by doing this. She was helping Peter be a better goatherd. Peter eventually woke up and saw his face in a nearby pool of water. Upon hearing the girls giggling and shaking their bare bottoms, Peter tried to run after them, but they were too fast for him.
Now a safe distance away, Heidi introduced Gretel to her animal friends. Snowdrop the little goat, Pichi the baby bird and her grandfather's dog Josef. Gretel had some very nice conversations with all three of them and Heidi was amazed that her friend could talk to them all. But by this point, Peter had caught up with them and said that he was going to tell the Alm-Uncle all about how naughty they were.
However, Josef stopped him as he was now on Gretel's side after she told him everything. All of the hullabaloo eventually attracted the attention of Heidi's grandfather, who came outside to see what the noise was about. Afraid at being told off for showing her bottom out in the open, Heidi hid behind a water trough so only her upper body was seen. Gretel had no such shame and she explained that it was customary to do it where she came from, which the Alm-Uncle gruffly understood.
As the afternoon wore on, Gretel became hungry, so she and Heidi had a lovely picnic on the mountainside. The lovely bread and alpine treats resulted in them getting two plump pot bellies but by the time they'd finished their treats, it had gotten late and Gretel needed to return home. The two penpals hugged each other warmly with Gretel promising that she'd come back tomorrow during her visit to the Alps. Heidi was really pleased to hear that and waved goodbye to her penpal friend as she made her way down the mountain until she was out of sight.
