The coaches were used instead of freight cars as the dearly departed Rev. Wilbert Awdry quoted that every wise engine knows they must never trust freight cars case in point when James locomotive of this type was derailed when his brake blocks caught fire.
In related topics the cowcatcher is included due to the railway being in America (Norfolk Southern) where the cowcatcher is standard issue component for eliminating obstacles on track.
