Nick gets the most surprising client of his career to date: Masashi Mikotoba, his cousin through his great-great-grandparents! He's come to America to press a claim over the Asogi Clan's ancestral sword, which he claims belongs to his and Nick's family rather than its current owner, Franziska von Karma.
However, all copies of the will which support his claim seem to have been lost, so Nick decides to consult (via Maya's spirit channelling) a contemporary witness to the events themselves - his own great-great-grandmother, Susato Mikotoba! Seeing her descendant take up the same profession leads to her asking to stick around for the civil trial itself!
It's hard won and Masashi succeeds in pressing his claim, but things take a sudden turn when Masashi is found beaten senseless, seemingly with Karuma itself, and it's now up to Nick and Susato to defend the very prosecutor they'd just defeated in court from a charge of assault and robbery...
